Your Body Is Listening. Be Kind

blog kindness self compassion Nov 28, 2021

As we wind down the Thanksgiving weekend in the U.S., where does your body need a little kindness?

If you found yourself enjoying some of your favorite holiday foods -- some that you haven’t had in a while -- maybe your body needs a little TLC...maybe getting back to the foods you normally eat and that feel good in your body?

If you’ve struggled with food like I have, it’s easy to want to beat yourself up and approach Monday with a reset mindset.

One that is focused on “fixing” or “undoing” the indulgences...as if eating them was a bad thing.

What if the days when we eat a little more are just like days where we *feel* a little more?

Many of us have experienced some sadness in the last year, and, yet, there’s also been joy. We can experience both...and some of us experienced both joy and sadness just this weekend.

If we could look at our days of eating more and eating less as part of the natural waves of our lives and experiences, could we stop the self-judgment tapes that sound like, “Oh, I was so bad...I shouldn’t have done that?”

When I approached any Monday as a day to “start my diet again…,” I was stressed from the get-go, and hyper-focused on trying to “control” my eating.

The tight grip of that hyper-focus (aka willpower) was never sustainable.

And it really just kept me in the loop of self-criticism until I couldn’t take it anymore and returned to overeating.

What if what we don’t need is another diet or restrictive eating plan, but instead to start caring for our bodies like a beloved friend?
