What will be different when you lose weight?
Sep 04, 2022What do you imagine will be different when you lose weight?
Will you feel more confident?
Dress differently?
Engage in more of the experiences you’ve been putting on hold?
What if you were to create more of those experiences for yourself now?
When we put off experiences we want, dressing in ways that we like, or feeling confident for that “some day when…” we lose some weight, our brains hear that as we’re not worthy of our own attention now.
And that’s simply not true.
What’s more is that our brains start to connect that lack of self-regard to other areas of our life, too.
If we keep putting off experiences that give us pleasure and joy, it also becomes easier to disregard the commitments we made to ourselves to eat better or to take better care of ourselves.
We might say to ourselves that our efforts to eat better or move more don’t matter or we’ll ask ourselves, “What difference does this make anyway?”
This subtle form of self-sabotage can undo our goals without us even realizing it.
By treating ourselves now as well as we’d treat ourselves in the future, we show ourselves what it *feels* like to be cared for well...and, we start to want more of that.
Early in my weight loss process, I found some really cute knee-high boots with a wide calf that fit. I stuffed those boots in the back of my closet -- not feeling confident enough to wear them.
And then I’d wear them in short spurts, and I’d feel amazing when I did.
Honestly, it was one of the first times I connected how dressing well could make me feel more confident. I’d simply spent so many years covering up my body and not wanting to be noticed, that this was a new discovery for me.
And one that I wanted more of.
How about you?
What have you been putting off that you’re willing to create more of now?
